Kali Dubuc Brousseau

Biography

Let me introduce myself, my name is Kali. But as an artist, I'm known as Mutant Nature. I am a visual artist whose quest is to explore and experiment with different creative spheres, inspired by the impermanence of nature and its various metamorphoses. I have always loved going for walks in the forest. They are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. Thanks to the influence that nature, in all its forms, exerts on me, it awakens my imagination and my sensitivity. It also evokes rich and deep intuitions and reveries in my mind.

During my childhood, I also had the chance to be introduced to drawing, painting and sewing by several members of my family. In doing so, I quickly discovered that it was much easier and more satisfying for me to express what I was thinking and feeling through artistic creations of all kinds.

In high school, I followed a program focused on the arts at the Jacques-Rousseau school in Longueuil. In 2012, I then began studying Theater Production at Cégep Lionel-Groulx in Ste-Thérèse with the intention of moving towards the creation of stage sets and costumes. However, a thirst for adventure made me realize from the first year that my desire to travel was more than essential at that time. I know full well now that this about-face was decisive for my journey, both personal, spiritual and artistic.

In 2019, I returned to studies by completing a technique in artisanal cabinetmaking at the École d'Ébénisterie d'Art de Montréal (ÉÉAM). This journey has been rich and valuable from more than one point of view. Among other things, I learned, thanks to it, the importance of developing essential skills and qualities such as discipline, critical thinking and manual dexterity. I was also taught to develop my entrepreneurship skills. However, I recently made the choice to temporarily put a break on this career to concentrate mainly on the visual arts. That said, I keep an unforgettable and unalterable knowledge from this experience.

Today, I devote myself mainly to drawing. However, I do not limit myself only to this form of artistic expression, on the contrary! Indeed, my fields of interest are far too vast and varied not to feel the desire to explore and experiment with other creative spheres, such as those of sculpture, bookbinding and costume making or accessories, for example.

Artistic approach

The theme that comes to me in a natural, obvious and recurring way is that of transformation and its relationship with time. I navigate in this concept by drawing inspiration mainly from the impermanence of nature and its various, innumerable metamorphoses, those that are not perceptible at first glance. The occult sciences, the natural sciences and the sciences of the psyche are also very present research subjects in my creative process. These lessons feed my reflections on the meaning to be given to the interconnectivity that links the visible to what is not.

I reveal the theme of transformation by combining and juxtaposing a variety of textures, geometric patterns, flowing lines and intertwining shapes creating both a dark, mystical and organic visual universe. My intention is also to create a complicity between order and chaos, two notions which for me are inseparable and complementary. By looking more closely at my works, one can discover multiple facets and dimensions thanks to the micro-details that compose them. Black is my favorite color. Not only does it give my works an appearance of simplicity and elegance, but it also reveals their rebellious and mysterious character.

My production pace is quite slow and intuitive. I am particularly interested in repetitive, random gestures and I favor the action of creating, the one that leads me quietly towards an unknown final result. By letting myself be absorbed by the present moment, I reach a meditative and contemplative state, while remaining lively and alert. It is in these creative moments that time stands still. I can then immerse myself in what arises inside me and discover all that inhabits my mind and my senses.
